@Evertb: Great
suggestions, loved both movies but seen them loads. I would like to
read the book of I am Legend after seeing the movie, loved the
things that showed how the lonliness was getting to him like the
mannequins.
And Dog soldiers, what a classic :D no further comments needed
on that :)
Have you seen Sunshine? I thought it was a great and different
take on a sci-fi movie. I recently got a bunch of Jaikuers to watch
The Breakfast Club... :) If you've watched the sci-fi series
Firefly, Serenity is the movie conclusion. The Incredibles and
Ratatouille are great relatively new animated movies. I keep
hearing good things about The Iron Giant, but I haven't watched it
yet. I liked Stranger Than Fiction with Will Ferrell. He wasn't his
overly wacky self in it, and he did a good job. Want a classic
comedy (yes, it's a romantic comedy, but still awesome for guys to
watch)? Watch When Harry Met Sally. It's one of my very favorite
movies ever. :D In the same vein, Music and Lyrics is a fun movie
with 80's-style music and parodies of current music. :)
@BigEclipse: Training
Day, wow, great one I was really impressed with it. I don't say
this about many actors but Denzel is fantastic. In the Hurricane
too.
Pulp, seen a bit too many times at this stage. Did a huge public
speaking thing on it way back in secondary school.
And Taxi Driver, as in with R d Niro? too many movies have taxi
in the title. I remember I saw it but really don't remember the
movie itself so that goes on the list too :)
Everytime I see a recommendation for The Descent, it makes me
think of Wolf Creek, probably because I saw both movies on the
recommendation of the Cool Shite on the Tube podcast (entertaining
podcast out of Tasmania). Also, while I enjoyed The Descent, I
thought Wolf Creek was the better of the two films. They're not of
the same plot, but they're both thriller/horror movies.
28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are high on my Netflix queue
for rewatch. :)
I see @BigEclipse
recommended a Terminator movie; I recommend watching all three
films. I did so in preparation for The Sarah Connor Chronicles
(which I thought was pretty good), and it was surprising to me how
good the Terminator movies have held up after all this time.
Cloverfield has just come out on DVD recently. I'm waiting for
the Blu-Ray release, but I think I'll put the DVD in the queue in
the meantime.
Hot Fuzz is great, as is Shaun of the Dead. :)
Big Trouble in Little China is quite dated, but still very
funny.
Mullholland Drive is a crazy David Lynch film, but I have read
that it is the most accessible one.
The Ring was a great remake of Ringu, and having seen both, I
prefer The Ring, which doesn't usually happen when I compare
Japanese films to their US remakes.
I recently rewatched Solaris, and it is definitely not your
typical sci-fi flick, but I enjoyed its cinematography and
soundtrack. I like the movie, but compared to Sunshine, I like
Sunshine more. Solaris is really introspective and very slow, but
some of the ideas were interesting.
If you listen to the Scene Unseen podcast, you will get a TON of
movie recommendations. The two hosts are quite entertaining, and a
lot of the time I agree wholeheartedly with their movie reviews.
Even when I don't agree, there's still a lot of other movie recs
that I want to go back and add to Netflix. :)
I Am Legend - the book - is approximately 100 million times
better than the movie. The title makes sense in the book, for
example. Book is incredibly bleak but excellent. You're in for a
treat.
House Of Flying Daggers dull as all hell. Iron Monkey genius. I
recommend Zatoichi (recent Beat Takeshi one) - really good with
some nice comedy in there too.
I enjoyed 'there will be blood' and 'no country for old men'
recently. 'Perfume' is excellent. Some others at random. Ghost in
the shell, akira, the big lebowski, 2001 a space odyssey.
Hmm, i know i'm failing to think of loads of my favourites here,
i'll look through my collection when i'm back at it and pick out
some good ones along the lines you're looking for.
More goodies? At random. Bubba Ho-Tep. Network. Firefly (the tv
series. Classic). The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three. Monster
House. Office Space. The Frighteners.
True, the cast of Cloverfield were stupid and unforgettable. I
guess I was fascinated enough with the monster and the whole
mystery surrounding it (which we found out about more when we
Googled Cloverfield and saw all the stuff about the viral marketing
and online content for it) that it made up for the annoying cast. I
was also pretty interested by the premise of found footage, though
of course it has been done before.
@Festoon: There are (will
be?) live-action Akira films? I just watched Akira today. I had
tried watching it a couple times in the past, but always fell
asleep during it. Today we watched it the whole way through and
while I thought it was interesting, it's not a movie I'll watch
again for a long time.
@adventsparky I have
my kids watching "I am legend now"! Loved "Dog Soldiers" because it
gripped me form beginning to end AND because some of it was shot in
a part of Luxemburg where I used to go hiking.
@festoon: Thought Shortt
was very good in "Garage". Overall it didn't hit me as a great
movie but it did pass a slow morning. Thought it caught the
atmosphere of a small rural village/town brilliantly
@Adventsparky:
Seriously? Wolf Creek was so much creepier to me than The Descent.
That dude from the Outback was one sinister guy.
Re: over the top action flicks, try Danny the Dog. It's another
Jet Li film; I thought it was pretty good. It's not slick and
digital-looking like The One or The Matrix, but it has some good
fighting scenes, IIRC.
Can't think of any similar movies at the moment, but I'll post
if I remember any later. :)
@timothyday Wonderful
movie!! Really loved it. It would be in my top 5 favourites. Not
sure where but it's there :) It takes quite a film to make you
forget how old it actually is and get you caught up in the film
itself. Even the sfx were impressive
@jezlyn: I liked the
Outback guy :D I thought he was so likeable for some reason and
like in Cloverfield I didn't care for the characters at all so that
ruins the whole thing a bit when you don't care if they live or
die. That being said, I still did like it. Come to think of it the
characters in Descent were equally unlikeable....
Well, in the case of Wolf Creek, it wasn't that I cared about
the characters, rather I was shocked by the Outback guy and his
creepiness (and violence). I guess there are some times when I
don't have to be heavily invested in the characters to care about
the story.
I was engrossed by the story in The Descent, but the characters
started to act a bit too annoying for me as the end approached. And
IIRC, I was amused by the ending, not really scared. Which can be
good sometimes, but this time I would've preferred it stayed scary
to maintain the illusion. Oh well. :) Maybe I should rewatch
it...
I don't know I just felt a lot of Wolf Creek was more silly than
scary, more predictable, more run of the mill. But then again I was
expecting more from it than The Descent which I watched having no
prior knowledge of it.
The Thing is a stone cold classic. Carpenter, when at his best,
was just incredible. (i.e. They Live, Hallowe'en, Assault On
Precinct 13). I love his self composed and performed
soundtracks.
Last night was Crouching Tiger. Much better than I expected.
Going against @festoons
judgement on house of flying daggers I'm going to have to watch it,
it's the sequel to CTHD?
Other things on the cars for tonight are Dark City and BSG
When I went to see it in the cinema it was along the lines of
'sure there is nothing else on lets go to this'. I had known
nothing about it other than Jet Li was in it and I got that
information on the poster outside :P
I was very surprised that the movie was subtitled and it is
still the only film I have seen subtitled in the cinema but overall
I was impressed and really enjoyed it.

Ok, @jezlyn: Really enjoyed Sunshine, watched it when I had heard bad things but it really shone through (did i just say that?)
Just watched serenity yesterday :) Another nice scifi
The Incredibles and Ratatouille are high on my list of fav animated films.
Stranger than fiction was great fun to watch. "Little did he know"
When Harry met Sally I remember as being good but doesn't really stick in my mind though as being anything exceptional.
The Iron Giant(the animated one from 99? It was a nice film but again didn't really stand out for me but it was a long time ago.
That leaves Music and Lyrics. I'll put it on the shortlist :P
NEXT!! ;)
