Appleseed was great! Nice bit of action. easy going
entertainment. I am also trying to source a film i saw a while ago
that I forgot the name of.
Set in Japan, without giving away the whole story japan have a
field around the country so no one can get in or out and they have
been out of contact with the rest of the world for 10years when
they films kicks in. any ideas?
Some of my favorites: * "Who The Hell Is Juliette" (aka "Quien
Diablos es Juliette?") * The Warriors * "Y Tu Mama Tambien" (And
Your Momma Too!) * From Dusk Til Dawn
There Will Be Blood was great. I didn't think it was my kind of
movie, but it was entertaining, and it really stuck with us after
we watched it (and not just the famous quote).
We watched The Mummy and The Mummy Returns... Popcorn movies.
The Mummy Returns was better than The Mummy, IMO. Better story.
Tropic Thunder, Wall-E, Dan in Real Life (a lot of people seem
to hate this movie, but I thought it was good; Steve Carrell acted
really well in it)...
I was mainly joking; the Mexican version is about ten minutes
long since the director cut out all the stuff that might be
slightly provocative, in protest of censorship of Mexican
media.
The US "R" version cut out about five minutes of stuff,
including about ten seconds of the final bedroom scene.
@bishop, I watched both
the us and the mexican versions and it sucks that they edited stuff
out of the us version. @edy, I
also watched Lucia y el Sexo and liked it.
The Media Arts Center here in San Diego has a fall film series
they call "Cinema en tu Idioma". It's a run-up to the San Diego
Latino Film Festival in March, where they have a few hundred
Spanish-language films playing over a ten-day period, plus
workshops, presentations by directors, after parties, etc. Great
time. :)
Some friends of mine saw XXY, and honestly....the one who
invited them liked it (predictably) but the guy who got invited who
shares tastes with me said it was a predictable dark comedy type.
:-/ Not that I was ever very interested in seeing it in the first
place
I've probably suggested this before, but I still think it's a
great movie -- Ju-On. Started out as a direct-to-video movie, but
then was remade by the same director/writer for theatrical release.
If you can get hold of the direct-to-video version, I think it's
the creepiest, even though cinematography and effects were
low-budget. But the original Japanese theatrical release of Ju-On
is still pretty good. The remake with American actors (again, by
the same Japanese director/writer) is alright, but I think the
original Japanese version is better in this case (for The Ring, I
thought the American remake was better than the original
Ringu).
Skimmed the Netflix queue and came up with Severance.
Haven't watched it yet, but heard about it from a movie review
podcast I listen to. I seem to remember it described somewhere as
Office Space meets zombies, or something to that effect.
@Festoon: my brother
bought me Grave of the Fireflies a long, long time ago because he
knows I like anime. I have yet to watch it! All I've heard about it
is that it's a great film, but very sad/depressing, so I haven't
worked up the motivation to watch it yet.
@jezlyn - Shame, you
really should watch it. If you think that's sad, you should watch
Kayoko's Diary, which is pretty much the same, 1945 Japan, seen
through the eyes of little Kayoko
